Active-Passive Voice

Active and Passive Voice are two ways of expressing the same idea, but they differ in focus. In the active voice, the subject performs the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action, and the doer (agent) may or may not be mentioned.

Structure

  1. Active Voice: Subject + Verb + Object
Example: The teacher (S) explains (V) the lesson (O).

  2. Passive Voice: Object + Form of “be” + Past Participle + (by + Subject)
Example: The lesson (O) is explained (V) by the teacher (S).

Rules for Conversion

  1. Object of active → Subject of passive.

  2. Verb → “Be” form + Past Participle.

  3. Subject of active → Agent (“by” phrase) in passive (can be omitted if unimportant).

  4. Pronoun changes:

    • I → me, We → us, He → him, She → her, They → them.
  5. Tense must be preserved.

When to Use Passive Voice

  • To emphasize the action rather than the doer.
  • When the doer is unknown or unimportant.
  • In formal/scientific writing.
Example: The experiment was conducted successfully.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to change pronouns correctly.
  • Using the wrong form of “be” with the verb.
  • Overusing passive voice, making sentences less direct.
