Nihira is 25 years old and Punith is 30 years old. How many years ago was the ratio of their ages 3 : 4?

Question

Accepted Answer

Let the number of years ago be x.

At that time, Nihira's age = 25 - x
Punith's age = 30 - x

According to the problem, the ratio of their ages was 3 : 4.

So, (25 - x) / (30 - x) = 3 / 4

Cross-multiplying:
4(25 - x) = 3(30 - x)
100 - 4x = 90 - 3x

Bring variables to one side and constants to the other:
100 - 90 = 4x - 3x
10 = x

Therefore, 10 years ago, the ratio of their ages was 3 : 4.
